今日もおつかれさまでした。

今日は大阪大学の問題でした。記述の問題に挑戦です。

設問の2は、ThisThisが指し示す内容を，日本語でわかりやすく説明しなさいというものでした。

普通、thisは直前のものを指します。

ですから、

"it travels at different speeds in different layers of the ocean, fastest of all at the bottom"

の部分を指しています。これを日本語で書けば正解です。

設問3は和訳でした。

The denser the medium, the faster the molecules shake as the sound wave goes through it.

いわゆるThe + 比較級 ～、the + 比較級...の構文です。mediumの後にbe動詞のisが省略されています。

「媒体の密度が高ければ高いほど、その分だけ分子は、音波がそれを通って伝わるときに速く振動する」

というくらいの意味ですね。

設問4の「クジラと鳥はどのような点で異なると述べているか」の該当箇所は、l.25以降の...

"Researchers who came back summer after summer noticed subtle changes in the songs each year, all the whales in the area picking up the changes. This means that whales are very different from birds, those other well-known singers of the natural world, whose songs remain stable over time."

の部分です。クジラの歌が変化するのに対し、鳥などの歌は、"whose songs remain stable over time"なわけですから、変わらないというのが特徴です。

「クジラは、自分たちの歌を少しずつ変えてゆくが、鳥の鳴き声は変わらないということ。」

が正解です。
